Discover the Dos and Don'ts of the Alkaline Diet

Most of us have heard of the alkaline diet. Its everywhere, and ever since the top Hollywood celebs have endorsed it on different platforms, the popularity of the alkaline diet surged like never before. Of course, this is not an easy diet, and if you are someone who survives on meat and dairy, this might be even tougher. Nevertheless, the alkaline diet is certainly not a fad diet. Its natural, and if you have the patience and can put in all the required effort, you will lose weight, especially when thats your main goal. In this post, we bring you the dos and donts of the alkaline diet. If you are just starting out and need some initial advice, the tips below will surely come handy.
The Dos:

1. Get a cookbook. You cannot survive or follow the alkaline diet if you keep on eating out. There are many well-known cookbooks that make cooking easy when you are following this diet. Get one of them and start making your own meals.

2. Eat alkaline promoting foods. Most fruits and veggies are considered great under this diet, so when you arrange your plate, these should cover most of it. Also, you can include a lot of lentils, almonds, nuts and sprouts.

3. Focus on soy products. Since you cannot have some of the common dairy products, soy products are your best bet. Go for tofu, soy milk and nuggets, which are easy to cook. You can also have soy drinks that are available in the market.

4. Include vitamin enhanced water. Go for alkaline water, which supports the diet. Pick a brand that offers a pH score of 9 or more. Alkaline water has some of the essential vitamins and minerals, which are important for your body.

The Donts:

1. Skip alcohol. Yep, you read that right! Alcohol is banned in the alkaline diet, so say goodbye to your regular dose of white and red wine. All other drinks, including beers, are also excluded from the list.

2. Cut down all meats. This includes pork, chicken, beef and turkey. You need to eat healthy, and that doesnt include any of the red meats. If thats tough for you, try and skip some of the red meats, if not white meats including fish.

3. Skip junk food. Well, chips, nachos, ready-to-eat meals and all kinds of foods that come from a packet are banned too. Since you cannot have cheese, pizzas, burgers and processed foods must be avoided totally.

Final Tips:

Any diet, no matter how effective it might be, wont work on its own. You need to indulge in least an hour of physical activity each day. The alkaline diet is certainly effective for weight loss, given that most of the harming foods are banned from your meals, but if you want to achieve sustainable results, you should consider a good workout plan. Dont shy away from talking to your dietician, who may have a few tips and suggestions for following the diet, keeping your health history in mind.

Discover the Benefits of Using Solar Panel Solutions for Homes and Apartments

Technologies have changed a lot over the years and ever since, solar panels have become more efficient and compact, to the point that people these days can even use them at their home, in residential areas. Some might even go as far as calling all types of Solar panels fitted at homes, a smart and important investment. This applies to people living in urban cities along with those residing in rural areas; the reasons and advantages to doing so being vast and numerous.

Here are some of the Important Benefits one can consider when opting for Solar Panels:

1. Its an Investment:-

The first and foremost aspect to consider and understand for a person deciding to buy a Solar panel for home, is that its an investment. Instead of treating it like some expenditure, people should recognize these solar panels as investments that, just like any other investment will give back gains and returns.
It is not a surprise to many that solar panels are relatively expensive. However, what they lack for in good pricing, they make up for in their uses and requirements.

2. Reduce Bills and Expenditure:-

Electricity consumption rates and bills are through the roof in many urban households. In times of high costs of living owing to taxes and expenditures, investing in getting a solar panel system for use can have a positive impact. People will find this alternative to the usual electricity bills at their home, much more appealing.
A solar panel system, installed at a persons home can effectively ease the reliance on main-source electricity. The energy generated from sunlight conversion can amount to upwards of 35% to 50% of the entire households energy requirements.

3. Solar Inverters are Available:-

People buying solar panel kits for their home also have the option to buy a solar inverter with it. These inverters must have a battery capable of storing converted, solar-energy. People using solar inverters in conjunction with solar inverters will be able to make the entire energy process at their homes effective and smarter.
All this is achievable for anyone since solar inverters will basically convert and store the energy that is made in excess by the panels. This energy would have otherwise been wasted because a household doesnt require high amounts of electricity all the time.

4. Adds to the Value of Ones Property:-

Solar panels are just like any important, vital feature of a home or apartment. Features that add perspective and value to any property because of their uses and merits. For instance, just like a house fitted with a garage, or garden, a house fitted with a solar panel system would look very good for those looking to sell their property later in the near future.

5. Choose for Different Kinds of Purposes:-

Owing to the different kinds of panels available, one can buy panels having Monocrystalline cells, Polycrystalline or even Thin-Film solar cells. Each of these kinds of solar panels has different characteristic features and people can buy them according to their specific needs and requirements.
Those looking for high-grade and efficient solar panels for use at home can select Monocrystalline ones. They are ranked as the best choice for residential Photo Voltaic system. One can also go with the Polycrystalline or Thin-Film solar cells which are easier to maintain, and more suitable for the budget-friendly.

The entire concept of using eco-friendly alternatives like solar energy is always appreciable because of every countrys interest in going green, reducing pollution and dependence. Since less energy is consumed by households that are equipped with Solar panels and PV systems, lesser resources are used to make electricity that is usually supplied to each and every home. This, along with the glaring benefits of solar panels mentioned above, should be more than enough to motivate any person into fitting solar panels at their homes.

Designing Better Futon Furniture

Designing Better Futon Furniture

Designing Better Futon Furniture

Furniture manufacturer often introduce new products and improve on them over time. The futon industry has followed this pattern as well over the years. The construction of a futon frame consists of several primary parts. They include a set of arms, rails, seat rack and back rack sections. Futon manufacturers vary the way they make these parts and the materials they use in the construction of these frames. Of course not all futon frames will be made the same and some manufacturers incorporate unique designs or features into their products that make them stand out. In this article we'll examine several current popular manufacturers of futon frames that have brought design innovations into the industry, their stories as well as the construction techniques and features that they have developed over the years.

The August Lotz Story:
August Lotz started out in 1897. Located in Wisconsin they got their start making wooden bee keeping equipment. Soon after that they would expand out into making wooden furniture components for several different furniture manufacturers creating a niche for themselves in that industry. In the early 1990s the company was purchased by Mark Barton and Mark Schlichter. They wanted to create fine solid hardwood furniture, futon furniture to be exact in a time when the futon industry was still quite young. Mark Barton was lead engineer and developed the existing designs used throughout the August Lotz futon frame line today.

His August Lotz futon frame design is unique when compared to other products throughout the market place. The seat and back section slats are designed with an interlocking English dovetail system that joints slat grid sections into the back rack and seat rack sections. While many manufacturers were using simple staples or nails for their slat support systems, Lotz was ahead of its time by incorporating high-end old world construction techniques into each August Lotz futon frame.

August Lotz frames are made from oak and many styles are available in a medium finish or an English oak finish. August Lotz was purchased several years ago by a Wisconsin manufacturer by the name of SourceCut Industries. That same commitment to design and quality of materials has remained the same. Their convertible sofas earned a Consumer's Digest Best Buy Award for premium futon frames. An award given to fewer than 5% of manufacturers in a given industry. While it's parent company SourceCut Industries offers domestic manufacturing, August Lotz products are imported with the same specifications and designs that have earned them the title of 'best value in the market'.

The LifeStyle Solutions Story:
Founded in 1989 under the name Elite, LifeStyle Solutions entered the market with some very unique designs in futon furniture. They were among the first brands to incorporate Asian inspired materials and designs into several futon frame lines and have made an impact with their front operated and easy to open futons.

LifeStyle Solutions imports their futon line of products from Indonesia which are made to their specifications. It has always been important to LifeStyle Solutions that their products be made from sustainable forests and their pieces are crafted from ITTO certified (International Tropical Timber Organization) plantation grown hardwoods. LifeStyle Solutions has also earned the Sustainable Forest Management Certificate that shows their production materials are legally harvested from well-managed forests as defined by a comprehensive list of regulations.

CEO Sean Pathiratne leads this fast growing furniture company and has built a reputation for creating exceptional quality and value in every LifeStyle Solutions futon frame. Much of the LifeStyle Solutions futon furniture is transitional in design which will allow it to blend in well with both modern and traditional home decor.

The Night and Day Furniture Story:
Beginning in the late 1990s, Night and Day Furniture was founded by Mike Gallawa. His simple goal was to create futon frames that could be converted easily from sofa to bed, making sure bolts can be lined up and ensuring that there is less hardware for the end user to have to deal with. Night and Day Furniture solved these issues with several patented features found throughout the Night and Day Furniture line.

Night and Day Furniture products are made from eco-friendly plantation grown rubberwood. Rubberwood is a member of the maple family of woods and offers a dense grain which helps in the kiln drying process. Rubberwood trees are latex producing and at the end of their cycle are cut down and replaced with new seedlings. Made in Malaysia. Night and Day futon frames are made to the highest standards of quality and construction.

Night and Day Furniture futons incorporate several different design features that are said to make assembly easier for the end user. The patented shoe fittings TM operating system incorporates several types of unique hardware applications. The Snapper TM provides snap on assembly and easy front conversion of your seat and back sections. ThumbNut TM is a barrel shaped nut that eliminates movement of the nut during assembly without the need for extra tools. Shoe Fittings TM systems are available Bronze or Gold depending on the features available.

In this article we've taken a look at several leading futon furniture manufacturers. August Lotz which was founded in the late 1800s went from making wooden bee hive equipment to creating wooden frame decks using sliding English dovetail joinery. Mark Barton was lead engineer for Lotz and created most of the concepts and designs used throughout the line today. LifeStyle Solutions was founded originally under the name of Elite and is an import manufacturer who brought transitional designs into the futon industry. LifeStyle Solutions was among the first brands to incorporate Asian inspired designs and finishes throughout their line. Finally Night and Day Furniture founded by Mike Gallawa. Night and Day wanted to take a unique approach to futon design by simplifying the way futons go together. Developing patented hardware and assembly methods allowed them to make a futon frame easier to assemble.

I have always found it interesting how different manufacturers approach the design of furniture. Often many of the design aspects are similar or the same but sometimes manufacturers take a unique approach to design or come up with a radically new concept that makes that piece of furniture so much better than other products in the marketplace. This is the case with these manufacturers who have found ways to take an existing product line and make it even better.

Designing A High Flow Fueling System Creates Challenges!

Designing A High Flow Fueling System Creates Challenges!

Designing A High Flow Fueling System Creates Challenges!

Metro-link was established in 1992 to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility in Southern California. It has been a resounding success. As with any successful operation of this type, Metro-link continues to expand its services throughout the Southern California area.

Metro-link connects Los Angeles with Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in Southern California and carries more than 38,000 passengers daily. As of December, 2009 it served a total of 55 stations on 388 route miles throughout Southern California.

When Metro-link needed to expand their mass transit system to the Inland Empire in Southern California, they recognized the need for a high flow fueling system as well as other local services. The search began for a contractor with the experience to meet their need.

MJK Construction, Inc. was selected to do the job because of their reputation for high quality performance and reliability. MJK Construction has a 20 year history in above ground storage tanks and underground storage tank installation and removal. They are also experienced in environmental construction and clean up.

Designing a high flow fueling system for this facility presented several challenges. Due to the proximity of the proposed fueling system to haul routes, property lines, overhead high power lines, existing and planned underground utilities, and location of rail tracks, the work area and placement footprint for the fueling facility was severely restricted. Further challenges to the project arose as a result of conflicts between existing state and local regulations and the projects needs. While existing regulations are more applicable to lower flow fuel systems, and state approved components are also geared to the lower fuel flow systems. MJK staff was required to meet with local agency representatives and speak with state agency representatives to resolve these conflicts.

Final challenges resulted in the unavailability of system components which would accommodate the large diameter piping required to meet the high fuel flow system requirements. MJK was up to the challenge of completing this project.

MJK installed shoring to facilitate work in the restricted area, designed and built a multiple tank storage system combined with high volume pumping equipment to supply remote fuel cranes necessary to fuel the rail equipment. MJK's staff met with local agency representatives and spoke with state agency representatives to resolve the conflicts in the regulations. MJK worked with local manufacturers to design and develop the specialized components necessary to complete the project, proving again that no challenge is too big to overcome.

Decorative Wall Paneling - Cover Up

We all have that one room in our homes where the walls are uneven and bumpy. When company comes over we steer clear of that one room. Every time we are out shopping we are looking through wall covering catalogs or asking the professionals questions. We just havent found the solution to our dilemma. That is until today.

The solution that can beautify, easy to maintain and can be applied right over the disastrous wall is decorative wall paneling.

Wall history dates back thousands of years ago. Walls have two main purposes. They act as a support for a structure and to divide or enclose an area. Wall paneling is a decorative treatment of walls which consist of thin sheets of different materials that are framed together.

It adds charm and style and brings luxury and sophistication to your living quarters. Decorative wall paneling is versatile, inexpensive and gives just the right look wherever it is placed. It is welcome in every room of the house. it can also be placed on walls below ground level. There are so many choices you will never be at a loss for inspiration.

Decorative wall paneling is available in a variety of finishes, textures and wood grains with distinctive groove patterns. Consumers have a choice of plywood, fiberboard, hardboard or engineered wood. Decorative varieties come in such styles as bead board, finished panels, wood grain, lionite, wainscot, plank panels and project panels.

Bead board panels add visual interest and are a great selection to use as an accent. Finished panels add richness and textures and are available in a variety of patterns and colors. Wood grain is usually oak or cedar and is pre-finished. Lionite is the toughest of decorative wall panels which is baked on and water resistant and has a melamine finish. Wainscot is pre-cut with a double groove pattern and comes in many wood grains. Plank panels are easy to install and can be hung vertically, horizontal, and diagonal or even in a herringbone pattern. Project panels have a dry erase surface. This is perfect for your home office, garage or basement.

There are eco friendly panels made from bamboo pulp which is one of the worlds most reusable resources. This does not have any chemical filler or additives and trees were not harmed in this process.

There is another wall paneling that uses decorative wrapped fabric that reduces noise and reverberation. You can order custom made panels to meet your specific needs.

Most wall panels are specially coated and sealed to resist moisture and water migration that can cause mold. This decorative solution has become a maintenance free solution for our hectic lives. Install it and enjoy it. Its just that simple!

Whether you hang this to cover up an existing wall, disguising a not so smooth wall or just to add a modern decorative pattern you will be amazed at the finished product. Another perk is that modern materials have also allowed natural light to come in while preventing harmful UV rays to damage the wall paneling.

In todays factories, decorative wall panels are pre-cut to the correct dimensions. This minimizes the time of labor and installation. They also have easy to follow instructions and use many tools that you have around the house. This project is easily completed over a weekend.

If you decide to cover your entire room or just one wall my advice to you is get started. Make that impressive statement that we all desire. So at your next dinner party the entire house will be on show.

Cut Down Your Power Bill 10 Ways to Save Energy in Your Home Office

Cut Down Your Power Bill 10 Ways to Save Energy in Your Home Office

Cut Down Your Power Bill 10 Ways to Save Energy in Your Home Office

Working from home has become a strong career option for many. More and more people are turning to freelancing full time or being remote workers. It's become common for small business owners and entrepreneurs to have a home office HQ. How so?

We can thank the internet for that. For many jobs, it's no longer necessary to work at a corporate office. This has also resulted to less commuting, which means less traffic and air pollution. But, there's a possible downside. Having a home office means increased power consumption. Much more.

The higher your workload, the higher your electricity bill will get. This is a cost you have to keep under control to optimize your cash flow. You'll also be helping to preserve the environment.

There's a smart  way to manage energy consumption in your home office and prevent huge bills. Let's take a look at some of the best methods for energy conservation.

1. Select Energy-Efficient Equipment

When buying office equipment, look for products with reduced energy demands. Do you really need a desktop PC? A laptop will result in far less power consumption than a desktop computer and monitor. Inkjet printers uses less power than laser printers.

Choose multi-purpose gadgets. Using a printer-scanner will consume less power than two separate gadgets. While buying equipment, compare Energy Star products that will often state what you can expect in terms of energy use and costs.

2. Keep It Turned Off

Turning off gadgets that are not in use is just common sense. If you're not using it - switch it off. LED displays and indicator lamps are using more electricity than you may realize. If you have multiple appliances with LED displays powered up 24/7, you're wasting energy.

Whenever you can, organize your day so all your electricity needs are condensed into your working hours. Appliances that aren't in use should be switched off. Better yet, unplug them.  Sometimes the easiest thing to do is just leave things unplugged until needed.

3. Flat Screens Are Cheaper to Operate

Modern flat panel LED or LCD screens use less power than the bulky, old-fashioned cathode-ray tube (CRT) TVs and monitors. CRT devices waste most of their energy as heat. Unless you strictly need CRT monitors for your work, opt for energy-efficient flat screens. In the long run, this is you'll be saving both power consumption, and money.

4. Add Power Strips

Having all your office devices plugged into different outlets around the room can create a mess. It also makes it extremely hard to plug and unplug all of them. Use power strips that allow you to plug in multiple devices so you can turn them all off with a single switch. Keeping devices powered up, even on "standby", will add needless costs to your regular bill.

5. Let In Natural Light

One of the best ways to save electricity is to just open the drapes and blinds and let natural daylight in. Hopefully, your office area has plenty of windows. Natural light is obviously cheaper than using overhead lighting for eight hours a day. It's also a better option for your eyes than artificial light to help reduce eye strain and tension.

In the winter, you want to let warm sunlight in, but draw the shades in summer to minimize outside heat. You'll get more efficient energy use in both cases. Arrange you desk or other equipment to minimize the need for electric lighting and take advantage of the sun during cold months.

6. Energy-Efficient Lighting

When you have to use electrical light, choose energy efficient products.  There's a wide selection of LED bulbs, halogen, and CFL (compact fluorescent light) available. They do cost a little more upfront, but they'll save you money in the long run. They use much less energy and last longer than conventional bulbs. Traditional bulbs waste 90 percent of their energy as heat.

7. Have Weather Stripping In Place

Insulation is definitely a good way to control power needs.  Weather stripping will cut heat or AC loss through gaps around doors and windows. It will keep you feeling more comfortable, and productive. Blocking gaps and drafts allows your HVAC units to work more efficiently to lower power demands. Ideally, you should have an office door that you can keep closed to reduce heating or cooling needs in the rest of the house.

8. Green Power Sources

Installing eco-friendly solutions in your home, like solar panels, will save you the most money, and power. Depending on the system you set up, you could save money on your power bills or eliminate them altogether. But, this depends on how much do you want your home to be self-sufficient.

Solar power can be an expensive investment for a home system, but think about the amount you'll save with no monthly power bills, ever. You could also earn energy credits. Though you may need special permits, you can even sell excess power back to your electric company.

9. Leave Big Files For the Night Shift

Depending on the type of business you do, you'll have times when you must upload of download large files. This could be video, large applications, program updates, or entire databases. During such periods of heavy data exchange, your computer is working longer and harder. It will use more energy as well as greater risk of overheating. Run these computer-intensive tasks at night when there are no other applications making demands on your computer. That way, you'll efficiently save power.

10. Go Digital To Save Paper

One opportunity to save energy is to use your printer only when necessary. If you don't really need a hard copy, it's more energy-efficient to just keep the information as a digital file. Printers are relatively slow and power-hungry.

Paper documents take up space and add to clutter. Not only that, they significantly increase your waste. In the long run, this may prove to be counter-productive and lead to unnecessary expenses. So, whenever you can - go digital.

This is a Long-Term Investment

Working full time in a home office shouldn't be that different from a corporate one. It can be as productive as a corporate office, but also use too much power.  Still, you can adapt your home office and decrease its power usage by choosing energy saving options.

Use the methods showcased here. Your energy consumption will likely decrease, as well as your utility bills. Some methods might seem expensive at first, but regard them as long-term investments. Having a smart home office, one that doesn't waste power, will definitely motivate you to continue growing on your career path.

Choose what methods work best for you. Yes, your office should be energy efficient, but don't forget that it is your working area. You need to feel comfortable there. Are you ready to transform your office at home? You can start right now!
