Going Green & Saving Money with Downsizing

Downsizing isnt just for big businesses; nowadays many homeowners are making the decision to downsize. In some cases this is done in order to save money, others want to go green, and some people are just looking for a simpler lifestyle. No matter what the reason is for downsizing much can be learned from corporations and businesses that have gone through the process.

Start With a Plan

Every business that has ever gone through the process of downsizing has started out with a carefully planned strategy for the transition. In a corporation this may involve extensive communication between departments and from management to staff. In a home downsizing event it is important that everyone involved understands what the purpose of the move is. For example, if you are downsizing to find a simpler way of living that can influence the type of items you will want to move with you. Having a clear plan will help solidify the reasons for the move and help everyone feel more comfortable about their role in the new home. After all, downsizing often includes new rules for everyday living.

Sort through Your Stuff

Almost everyone has a tendency to collect something. Some people do so intentionally and others gather things quite by accident. When its time to move sorting through this collection of stuff can be rather taxing. This can be especially true when downsizing. Your goal is to get rid of things you dont need, dont want, or dont use. With that in mind you should plan to organize your things into items you will keep, items you will get rid of, and things that are trash. Later on you can make more definite plans about what to do with the things you need to get rid of.

Downsizing to Go Green And Save

Downsizing is a sensible way to go green. When you live in a smaller home you naturally consume less energy and leave a smaller ecological footprint. In a smaller home you will reduce your use of resources as well as your overall consumption of stuff. Using permaculture principles you can easily find ways to reduce use, reuse things, and recycle most of the items you own.

Getting Rid Of the Unwanted

You may decide to sell some of the things you have to earn a few dollars that can be used toward your moving expenses. But in the end you will probably find that you are still left with at least a few things you have no use for. Dont worry. There is a green solution for those too.

Just call 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. This is the Junk removal Phoenix relies on for eco-friendly services. Rather than simply hauling your rubbish to the landfill this company will work hard to ensure that usable items are donated to local charities and that anything that can be recycled will be.

Generation Names That Put You In Your Place - Yuppy, Yappy and Dinks

Generation Names That

Generation Names That Put You In Your Place - Yuppy, Yappy and Dinks

For some reason or other, we coin generational phrases to put people in their place. Or, is it to define subcultures of certain patterns of behaviour?

Mobileers were a community of early two-way radio users. According to Wikipedia, the Mobileers popularized the technology that birthed the mobile phone.

Permanent installations in vehicles gave way to the portable Bag Phones, equipped with a cigarette lighter plug. You wouldn't recognize the huge clunky piece of equipment these phones were, compared to the dinky pocket size we carry today. But I am getting ahead of myself.

In the early 1960's there was a youth movement that evolved into the Hippies. Again according to Wikipedia, 'Hippies originally were Beatniks', or the black people. Black by nature, not by skin colour. They were losers. Their message was, "Danger is fun".

Hippies were a group of people who moved into the Haight-Ashbury San Francisco area. Psychedelic rock, the sexual revolution, cultural diversity and drugs like cannabis and LSD, in order to explore alternative states of consciousness, became the hallmark of the Hippies. Flower Power symbolized their cry of "Make love not war", as they handed out flowers to passersby.

They were the frontier group of the 'Wild West' of our modern culture. Their far reaching effects included health food, music festivals, through contemporary sexual concepts (free love) and the use of drugs.

Many were eco-friendly and the forerunners of the Greeny Movement. They were also pioneers of the cyberspace revolution.

Today every school kid has a mobile phone, though I often wonder who pays the bills. But when mobile phones were relatively unheard of, there rose a group of Male Yuppies - Young Urban Mobile Professionals.

They had a particular stance that went with the title, as did most subgroups. One hand raised to the ear; Their other hand protectively placed on their briefcase; Head cocked to one side; Eyes glazed over as they stared at the distant horizon; A noncommittal grimace on the face.

Of course they were seen to eat at all the Yuppy restaurants and naturally drove a Yuppy car. They symbolized the young affluent professionals of the day.

Most of us thought they just evolved. But I think they were the result of very clever marketing gurus.

Either way, the Yuppy generation took over from the Baby Boomers - suburban, couple of kids, mortgage and the backbone of the community. That is after the Baby Boomers had dried out and come off the Grass, introduced through the Hippy stage.

Let's not knock the Baby Boomers though. Many a politician and Lord Mayor came from the later end of the Baby Boomers.

Strictly speaking the Baby Boomers may have been too long a period to be classically described as a 'generation'. The baby boom lasted over a post-war period of 18 years.

Why we have to put a name to every generation is totally beyond me? I could never work out just where I belonged, even though I contributed to the Baby Boomer period.

In Russia the Baby Boomers were called the Sputnick Generation, from the Russians race in space. How the two became connected is totally beyond me?

It was the rise of the contraceptive pill that heralded in the end of the Baby Boomer period.

Next came the DEWKS - Double Employed With Kids. Have a child, six weeks later dump the baby in the Creche/Child Care Centre and back to competing with your partner as to who brings home the most income.

The Yuppies become Yappies - Frustrated Yuppies having to deal with a couple of screaming kids, now that spanking children (corporal punishment) was being outlawed.

Sadly this was followed by the predictable KOOPF - Kids Of One Parent Families.

Next came the DINKS - Double Income No Kids. It became fashionable not to have kids. Why not, if you could no longer discipline them?

Dinks was more widely used than the usual generational term. There were Gay and Lesbian Dinks and a midget wrestler, Claude Giroux, took the stage name, Dink. The water had become decidedly muddied. No longer could you assume the person was with their husband or wife. It had become 'partner'.

According to some experts, if the trend of Dinks continued, intelligent professionals would become another 'dinosaur'. Extinct, due to the lack of DINKS not having children and reproducing themselves.

However, gays and lesbians, in same sex relationships, also contributed to the downturn in population growth.

Supposedly the DEWKS and DINKS are the privileged ones who have 'Disposable Incomes'. That which the economists say gauges the state of the economy.

Let me ask you this though, does anyone have income that can be 'disposed of', like polystyrene containers, paper tissues and disposable plastic bags? That of course is before bio-degradable became fashionable.

Somewhere in the middle of all this we have the term Nerd. The original stereotypical Nerd was 'white males with glasses and braces', according to Wikipedia. You wouldn't get away with such a term today, in our new found non-gender consciousness.

Nerd, or Nurd, was originally known as 'knurd', which is drunk spelled backwards. A nerd was a person who studied, as opposed to one who partied.

With the maturing advent of Cyber Space, the term Nerd has gained respectability. It is the Nerds of our world who drive Cyber Space.

Charles J. Sykes said, "Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one."

Then of course we always have the Trendys, who set the pace for the next generation. The feeding grounds of the latest fashion gurus and their high paid advertising junkies.

So we keep creating new terms, putting each generation into a neat little box. We also like to do the 'crab trick' - don't let anyone get out of the box. Pull them back if it looks like they are escaping.

If you live long enough, chances are you will be around for quite a few of the names, in the cultural evolution. Or is it all plain rebellion to the established mores - status quo?

I want to add one more name to the list. Most of us only dream of being a Wyna. Better than being a Luza. If you have difficulty picking up what I am saying (writing) try speaking those two names out loud.

The world is full of Luzas, but in every generation there is a minority of Wynas, about 2%. Only those who dream big become a Wyna. What did the song say, 'Climb every mountain, ford every stream...'?

Right now there is a generation of people who are chasing after a 'Seachange'. When they go on holiday they yearn for cooling sea breezes. Some coastal communities have been classed officially as a Seachange area.

It was even reported that one such city was attempting to restrict the numbers of visitors that flooded it during holiday periods and stretched the amenities beyond their limit. Will they create a boarder around the city and produce passports? Another Berlin wall?

Wyna says there are children in Vanuatu and other geographically isolated areas, who are financially underpriviledged. Without help they will never have the opportunity to go to high school, because they live in a cashless society.

Together we can help them. We can make them Wynas.

Future TrendsThe End of the World In 2012Get Over It!

First it was Y2K and now it's the end of the world in 2012? Get over it!

Welcome to the second decade of the 21st Century! How did that happen so quickly? Seems like we just got over worrying about our computer systems imploding on the eve of 2000, which proves my point: Worrying about things that probably won't happen, is a waste of time. True futurists see possibilities as well as pitfalls and seek to prepare rather than scare. The times, while certainly changing and challenging, are also very exciting indeed.

Here are 5 major trends/possibilities to watch for and act upon in 2010 and beyond:

1. Green Technology/Water Conservation

The terms Green technology, carbon footprint, climate change, eco friendly, re usable, recyclable will be the words spoken, written, discussed and planned for in huge proportions from now on. This will impact large industry as well as small businesses and households who will be compelled willingly or unwillingly to save the planet. Business travel will more limited as the "carbon footprint" is more top of mind. It will be replaced with online and virtual meetings. This will impact airlines, hotels and other travel related industries. However, it will also greatly increase opportunities for online learning, webinars and teleseminars. Hopefully, that will mean not only less carbon dioxide in the air but more quality time at home. Water shortages will replace gas shortages. Growing populations create agricultural and industrial growth. Everybody is going to need more water. Every industry, from agriculture to manufacturing to landscaping and pool services will be impacted. How can you participate in these growing trends? What service can you provide/create for this growing need to reduce the carbon footprint?

2. Elder Care

Life expectancy grows to age 100+. This will affect every aspect of society - from jobs, housing, health care, retirement needs, mortality tables, insurance costs, elder care/assisted living needs, the definition of a nuclear family and caregiver roles. Growth in a senior population will affect laws on inheritance, elder abuse, conservancy, real estate, investments, housing design and construction, medical care and medical support systems.

This phenomenon is causing a shift in elder care models. What worked for families with ailing seniors in the late 20th century may not be possible or practical now. Adult children live more hectic and demanding lives and may not live nearby. By the time senior parents need help, their kids are near retirement too! Savings and retirement funds are running out as people are living longer. What is to be done as the majority population of the western world continues to age? The need here is huge. What kinds of services can you provide to this growing population and their concerned families?

3.Internet:

It's getting bigger and more important by the minute. The worldwide web offers everyone who is "connected" to search for information, hire a professional, purchase homes as well as goods and services and even meet the person of their dreams. LinkedIn, Facebook and a myriad of other social networks allows people and businesses to connect. It's not going away. It's only going to get bigger and more important. If you still see yourself as only "local", you are in the minority and you are missing out on amazing internet marketing and sales opportunities. Individuals and businesses are now connecting all over the globe. If your website is 20th century brochure style - get moving and get interactive. Videos and blogs are not a passing fancy and really promote your website presence. What can you do to update your web presence right now?

4. Personal Growth/Personal Health/Slowing Down the Aging Process:

As baby boomers are seeing their parents reaping the rewards of unhealthy living (smoking, obesity, lack of exercise) requiring walkers, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks at the end of their lives, they are beginning to rethink their own lifestyles so as not to suffer the same fate. It's not just about looking younger. It's about feeling younger... Health and Fitness is the wave of the future. Low glycemic index diets, exercise, and a new awareness that diabetes 2 is purely lifestyle related and not to be expected in old age is the new trend. This will affect restaurants and food manufacturing and packaging. Think brown rice and whole grains. Goodbye simple carbs, saturated fats and high fructose corn syrup. It's making us sick and we know it. It may be convenient up front but very costly at the end and we know it.

As mainstream churches struggle to remain relevant in the 21st century, New Age thinking, ala The Secret is on the rise. Meditation, Yoga, Retreats and Health Spas cater not only to individuals but companies looking for innovative ways to conduct business meetings and team building events. Blend making more money with getting healthier and you have struck gold. If you are in the health, wellness or hospitality industry, this is a major trend for you.

5. Re emergence of Entrepreneurship

In 1776 more than 95% of all Americans were entrepreneurs. By the middle of the 20th century, that number had dwindled to less than 30%. The industrial revolution enticed people to leave their farms and shut down small businesses to seek employment in the cities. The Great Depression accelerated the process. This resulted in the breakup of families and a dependence on manufactured goods and credit.

In 2010, it is back to basics. Generation X & Y aren't so willing to give their lives to the corporation. Small business growth is seen as the savior of our downtrodden economy. Are you a small business owner? Rejoice. While you can buy a house or a car online, there are many services that must be done in person. If you are an electrician, plumber, medical care provider or other hands on professional, this is the decade for you. The key to your success will be customer service and follow up. In this ever increasing internet centered world, it will be the personal touch that you provide to your clients that will be the "secret sauce" that will grow your business.

There are many other trends in science and industry that are truly exciting - from smart machines that anticipate our every need to a possible cure for cancer and the end of inherited disease. While you are enjoying the benefits of these future trends, what will you do to contribute to them also?

From Egyptian Baskets to Rattan Garden Furniture The History Of Wicker

Rattan garden furniture is all but ubiquitous in present-day western society. Whether made of the actual, natural material or its highly popular synthetic facsimile, almost every garden features at least one of these types of items.

Yet what most rattan garden furniture enthusiasts may not be aware of is the way in which this material entered the western world, and subsequently became popular therein. The path linking the first few wicker-woven pieces to modern-day rattan garden furniture is a long and complex one, and this article will seek to offer a brief insight into its different stages.

In The Beginning

The story of wicker-woven furniture begins in ancient Egypt during the time of the pharaohs, specifically around 3000 B.C.. It was here that archaeologists have been able to place the first few pieces of wicker furniture, made not yet from rattan, but from weeds and reeds found in local swamps. These were used to weave baskets, chests and chairs, which were thought to be quite popular among Egyptians.

When the Roman Empire later invaded Egypt, wicker weaving was one of the many local customs which got assimilated into the host culture. Romans took to wicker furniture just as much as Egyptians, and woven pieces became a popular sight in patios across the Empire. Eventually, the Romans began to develop their own style of wicker-weaving, and their items took on an identity of their own.

Death and Rebirth

As with most things involving manufacture, wicker furniture production would experience a steep decline during the Dark Ages. The impoverished status of most of the worlds population during that time, and the preference for sturdier materials such as wood and iron, caused wicker furniture to become overlooked during this period, and eventually cast aside in favour of the aforementioned materials.

As such, the history of this type of item would remain stagnant until the Renaissance period, when a renewed interest for arts and manufacture brought wicker furniture back to public consciousness. The material quickly became popular across Europe once again, and the advent of seafaring travel would soon bring about a game-changing development for wicker-woven furniture.

Indeed, it was around this time that seafaring merchants travelling to Southeast Asian countries began to bring an exciting new material back from their travels: rattan, a flexible, malleable palm. Attractive and easy to work with, the material quickly caught on with weavers, and has since become synonymous with the art to the point of being confused with it.

From Home To Garden

Despite having been popular for three centuries beforehand, however, rattan did not become the go-to material for garden furniture until the 19th century. Specifically, the trend originated in Victorian England, and stemmed from the belief that rattan wicker items were more sanitary than upholstered furniture, mainly due to being easier to clean. The versatile nature of the material, allowing for any number of designs and styles, further contributed to its popularity among Victorian Brits, and pieces made out of rattan quickly became a staple not only inside British homes, but also in their gardens.

It is here that the history of rattan garden furniture can truly be said to begin. Over the next few decades, the material became more and more popular as the basis for garden and patio items, and this popularity quickly crossed over into America as well. By the mid-19th century, American were innovating wicker production, making it more automated, and pieces made out of rattan weave were becoming just as widespread overseas as they had in Great Britain. The materials popularity did take a slight dip in the early twentieth century, when tastes became more Spartan, but simplified designs and clean-cut lines quickly turned the situation around; in the span of only a few decades, rattan garden furniture was as popular as it had once been, and had begun a second resurgence.

From that point onwards, the story is well-known: rattan garden furniture became a common sight across the western world, and production methods continued to be innovated, right up until the point where natural rattan began to be replaced by synthetic polymers which improved durability and weather resistance. Nowadays, it is virtually impossible to walk into any western garden and not see at least one item made out of this material, and it is expected that the history of rattan garden furniture continues to be written for decades to come.

Frigidaire Air Conditioners - Why You Need One This Summer

Do you remember how hot it was last Summer? If you were like me, then you tried to save some money by simply putting a fan in the window and trying your best to endure the hot Summer night without the help of an air conditioning unit. Don't forget that prices increase the closer we get to Summer, so even if it's dark and rainy outside, do yourself a favor and save some money by investing in a cooling unit sooner rather than later! But, as with any purchase, it's important to educate yourself with regard to the choices you have before you buy. It is important to remember that the use of an air conditioner can escalate the cost of your utility bills and the use of energy. Also, did you know that humidity amplifies how hot the temperature feels? This is because the warm water molecules are held against your body. Consider a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture within your house, which will further contribute to a cool environment.

In warm climates such as Arizona, central AC is common. However, central systems are innefficient and consume a lot of energy, which can cost you a lot of money. Portable air conditioners, which are usually perched in windows, or wall units, which are installed in areas that you want to stay cool, may be an acceptable and more energy-friendly option.

There are many different brands and sizes to choose from. The Frigidaire FAa065P7A, with a 6,000 Btu rating, is Energy Star rated and won a "best rated" award by a compilation of reviews by a consumer rating company in June of 2009. It won the award based on its ability to cool rooms of about 200 square feet, with ease of use, a digital display and a handy remote control. Considering the price, performance and efficiency, this unit had the best combined rating. The only negative noted in the comments was the decibel level. Don't wait to start your product learning process until you're already cooking in the heat of the Summer. Frigidaire air conditioners are backed by a company that enjoys a stellar reputation in the industry. Look for the logo that will be identified on every item they manufacture. The logo is stamped with pride by Frigidaire to assure consumers they are purchasing an item that will perform to great satisfaction.

Many of the Frigidaire air conditioners have controls which can be used to set the temperatures by 3 speeds. Each of the Frigidaire air conditioners come with an antibacterial filter to keep out harmful airborne particles such as dust and bacterial.

By now, I hope you agree that it's never too early to start the search for an air conditioner. Purchase a Frigidaire air conditioner today and put your mind at ease because you'll be all set for summer!

There are additional assessments and details concerning Frigidaire Air Conditioners at my website. I am going to even let you in on a little secret: Where to get them cheaper than everywhere else on the web ;) Thanks a lot for browsing, and all the best!

Free Power for your home

Free Power for your home

Free Power for your home

So, you want to live off the grid!Produce the power you need for your home yourself and the hell with the power company!O.K. Now what about the days when there is no sun, like when it's raining? Or, when it's just cloudy? Or, how about at night time?No solar power during those times, that's a given. Now, what about if you want to live where there is very little or no wind most of the time? No wind generator then, right?

Well, I just so happen to know that there is now a method of generating power for your home by using a generator that is run by magnetic power. How about that? Talk about free power. Also it is just about the closest thing to a perpetual motion motor that you will find. Talk about quite? Can't even hear it run.

There is a revolutionary way to power your home on the horizon. A zero point magnetic power generator is basically a free energy generator. It runs by itself, indefinitely without stopping, thus creating completely free electrical energy, which can fully power your home for free.

This idea has been around for several years, but due to suppression by the big corporations(utility companies), it has never been out in the open until now. Part of the reason its seriously being considered is the current energy crisis, plus the generator is eco-friendly.This is about how to generate your own free energy through the use of a zero point energy generator, and its a solution that can save you thousands of dollars per year!

There is work being done on electric motors which use very strong permanent magnets to increase the efficiency of an electric motor to a point seemingly beyond unity, where the energy you receive is greater than the energy input. Some of these theories and claims seem to defy the laws of physics and many scientists are skeptical about these claims. There are people that claim these new technologies are being suppressed by a consortium that fears this technology will cause an economic impact on the exsisting power companies that would not be desirable to the country.

It has been seen with the designs of some of these devices, that a rotor can be made to move and do useful work using little more than carefully placed magnets (or combinations of permanent magnets and precisely-pulsed electro-magnets).

This electricity source has taken the world by storm in the past couple of months. Although the concept of using magnets to produce electricity is not new, the generator that could produce it economically viable for homes has been recently invented.
Besides the low cost of building this device, there are no variables cost to make it run. This magnet motor uses the power of magnets and magnetic forces as the only input source of energy to the system. It doesn't need any other source of energy to make it run. It is independent.

The best kept secret about the conception of a magnet motor evolves around the proper positioning and the size of the magnets used. The key principle is that magnets are polarized with one end positive and the other one negative. Placing to magnets of the same polarity close to each other will create a magnetic force that will repulse them and induce motion. Organising this motion to repeat by itself creates perpetual motion. Using the energy produced as the power source of an electric generator makes free electricity.

As technology continues to produce lighter, more powerful and more efficient permanent-magnets, the power companies will be able to produce electricty on a large scale at less cost. And it's the development of this technology that the power companies are awaiting.

But for a residential homeowner there is no need to wait. The technology is here to use permanent-magnets to power zero point energy generators on a smaller scale. In short, you can produce free energy today with your own zero point energy generator and reliably power your home while saving thousands of dollars in standard energy costs.

Another benefit of a magnetic generator, is that it is not very hard for a person to create. A large section of the populace think the creation of electricity takes a "rocket scientist", but it really isn't that difficult. The hard part, and expensive part of creating electricity is the ability to spin a turbine. In this case you can use magnetic power to spin a turbine perpetually and create power for your home. With the right guide that has step-by-step information even the inexperienced can create this with relative ease and with a budget that is affordable for all people.

Four Accessories to Complement Rattan Outdoor Furniture

Four Accessories to Complement Rattan Outdoor Furniture

One of the main truths universally accepted about rattan outdoor furniture is that it is visually appealing. Its unique aesthetic is a large part of what made furniture items made from this material so popular with the general public, and continues to be one of the driving factors behind the average man or womans decision to purchase a rattan outdoor furniture set for their garden, patio or balcony.

Yet, while both synthetic and natural rattan work perfectly well on their own from a visual standpoint, there is a simple, yet highly effective way to improve their appearance even further. That is, of course, through the use of accessories, four of the most common and popular of which are detailed in the lines below.

Cushions

Cushions are perhaps the first accessory the average man or womans mind drifts to when thinking of effective accessories to complement their rattan outdoor furniture set. As visually simple as they are appealing, cushions are a fantastic way to enhance the look and feel of a rattan set to make it seem even cosier and more welcoming to sit on.

Home-owners should take care, however, to ensure the cushions they buy to match to their rattan outdoor furniture set do not clash with the rest of the items, at the risk of the effect produced being the opposite of the one they were looking to obtain. Cushions in colours which clash with that of the rattan, for example, might make the set look haphazard and unappealing; similarly, elaborate patterns may not match well with the already intricately woven wickerwork present in most sets, creating a visually unappealing hodgepodge rather than the smooth, inviting, homely seating area the garden-owner might have been hoping for.

Still, a well-matched set of cushions can do wonders to improve the look of a rattan outdoor furniture set, and should definitely not be discarded as an option when looking to spruce up this type of garden furniture!

Parasols

Parasols are another great way to give a rattan outdoor furniture set that little something extra, so as to elevate it from merely visually appealing to truly visually stunning. A parasol in a colour scheme or pattern which matches or complements that of the rattan set can truly help bring out some of the items already highly appealing features, making the overall result even more visually striking than it would otherwise have been.

Parasols, of course, also boast another highly advantageous trait, namely the fact that they have a practical use beyond aesthetic enhancement. A parasol can actively protect garden-owners and their guests from the elements during particularly hot, sunny periods, as well as in the case of a rainy spell in the middle of an otherwise pleasant day. This dual role further helps cement them as the perfect accessory to complement a rattan set.

Lighting Fixtures and Flowerpots

Finally, lighting fixtures, in a colour scheme and material matching or complementing those of the rattan outdoor furniture set, can help tie together the entire outdoor area, thus adding to the visual impact and effectiveness of the furniture. Accessories such as flowerpots, ideally also made of rattan, can further contribute towards this effect, and really tie an outdoor seating area together.

It is easy to ascertain from the lines above, then, that carefully chosen and matched accessories can help a rattan outdoor furniture set excel visually even more than it would have on its own. Home-owners looking to have a highly appealing and inviting outdoor seating area would therefore do well to look into the possibility of acquiring one or more of the complementary items described above!

Finding Cute Womens Plus Size Dresses for Winter

Winter plus size fashion is not usually the most flattering or interesting clothing. The winter is the one time of year where human survival instincts seem to really trump the desire to look good. Don't get me wrong, if you go to your typical Midwestern college campus, you can sometimes see sorority girls wearing short skirts in the most foul, icy weather imaginable, drunk out of their minds and stumbling from frat party to frat party. In general, however, womens plus size dresses for winter disappear once Jack Frost starts to show us who is boss.

If you think about it, it is little wonder why. Who really wants to be uncomfortable in a winter dress when you can be secure in a warm winter coat? Even fall dresses are asking a little bit too much on some of the worst fiercest autumn days. The fall can be pleasantly crisp, but it can also be horrendous, pelting people with icy rain and cold winds. I remember how much I hated wearing winter formal dresses when I was growing up. If we would have a wedding, a funeral, or some other fancy events to go to, I would beg my mother to let me wear pants like my brothers got to. In the end, however, I would always have to give in and do what my mom told me. I would bundle up, but my legs would be freezing.

As I have gotten older, however, I have grown to think differently about womens plus size dresses for winter. Nowadays, it seems risky and adventures to wear a dress in the winter. In the summer, it is difficult to stick out for your looks. Everyone is wearing revealing clothing, and many of those people exercise several times a week. With womens plus size dresses for winter, however, you look good and you know it. People stop and look at you in the street simply because you are not bundled from head to toe. It can be pretty flattering, and it definitely makes it easier to meet people!

With proper layering, plus size dresses for winter don't have to be very uncomfortable. As a matter of fact, they can be downright cozy if you know what to wear. The key is to have a nice long overcoat to cover them. Wraps and shawls can also help, as can scarves and mittens. Once you have the proper attitude, winter can be another exciting occasion to invent new and adventurous fashion ensembles. It is all a matter of planning.

Feng Shui, The Original Green Lifestyle

Feng Shui, The Original Green Lifestyle

Renewable or sustainable energy, climate change and environmental pollution are in the headlines daily. Are you considering a shift to a greener lifestyle and making changes in your home to bring it into more harmony with the environment? Is it time to take action on your thoughts? Should you invest in a green lifestyle and eco-friendly products?

Whether you agree or disagree with everything you hear and read about the greening of America, you can definitely agree upon the fact that a lot of time, money and effort is being dedicated to this endeavor.

Defining a Green Lifestyle

I am sure that every person has their own definition of the greening of America and what living a green lifestyle would look like. And, sometimes those definitions are vastly different and totally at opposite ends of the spectrum. My rather simplistic definition of a green lifestyle is: people who support and replenish their environment and an environment that supports people through providing life giving atmosphere and resources in order that they both can flourish.

The second way I could describe a green lifestyle would be to live a Feng Shui lifestyle. The original Form School of Feng Shui is all about creating your home and life to be in complete harmony with your surrounding environment.

If you think about it, Planet Earth some 3000 years ago was in perfect balance. To be somewhat simplistic, Earth experienced day and night, heat and cold, wet and dry over a yearly cycle. It had oceans and land masses, mountains and valleys, barren land and crop supporting land. The earliest civilizations learned to work with their environment and to manage the resources.

The Ancient Chinese civilizations lived in harmony with their environment. They altered their environment by cultivating the land and building homes so as to survive. But when they learned to position their homes in harmony with the energy forms provided by the environment such as trees, hills, rivers and sunshine as noted in the Form School of Feng Shui they began to thrive.

Feng Shui Tips for a Greener Lifestyle

Since we cannot turn the clock back 3000 years nor do most of us wish to, there are a number of things we can do today, right now to live in better harmony with our environment. Rather than think about the environment from a global perspective which is out of reach for most of us, look around your home to find those things which are within your reach, you can control and do something about right now.

Recycle everything. Most people recycle the obvious such as bottles, plastic items, bags, newspapers, boxes and the like but take a closer look at things like electronic equipment, cell phones, computers, tools, books and appliances. Many areas now offer places to drop off electronic items and libraries love to receive new books that have been read only once. See what is available in your area.

Donate all useable clothing and household items to charitable organizations so they can be recycled to those in need.

Check in with local organizations like those dealing with domestic violence to see what items they regularly need that you may be ready to part with. Keep that list handy for future use and to share with others.

Remove your name from as many catalogue and flier mailing lists as possible to reduce the amount of printed mail you receive and toss. If you like certain catalogues but are receiving duplicates be sure to notify them to remove the extra name from the list. Encourage all of the catalogue companies you purchase from to print on recyclable paper.

Use canvas, cloth or mesh shopping bags to bring home your groceries. This will lower the number of plastic bags clogging up the environment plus save on the use of petroleum to manufacture them.

Get in the habit of using old towels as rags for some of those simple cleanups and spills throughout the house and garage instead of grabbing for the nearest paper towels. Old towels are easily recycled by simply washing and disinfecting them whereas paper towels add to landfills.

Use as many eco-friendly soaps, detergents and cleaning supplies as you can find. They are better for you to use because they are less toxic and are better for the environment because they are bio-degradable.

There are easily thousands of other things you can do and products you can buy that lend themselves to a greener lifestyle. However, you may have a question at this point, what does all this have to do with Feng Shui.

It has everything to do with Feng Shui. First many of the suggestions above are about clearing the clutter out of your personal environment which provides you better energy. Second, youve recycled a lot of your stuff which provides the environment more positive energy rather than having to deal with more waste. Third, youve improved your quality of life and that of the environment by using more eco-friendly products.

When it comes to the environment, everything you say, think and especially do does matter.

Fence Building Must-Know Things for DIY Project

Fence Building Must-Know Things for DIY Project

Fence Building Must-Know Things for DIY Project

A fence of a certain type may either serve purely decorative purposes and look like a pretty framework of your back and front yard, or be quite functional and protect your property from neighbors dogs entering the garden, prevent your kids leaving the backyard without you knowing about that, eliminate the curious strangers peeking into your home and maybe even become a part of your homes security system.

If your property doesnt have a fence yet and youre seriously considering building one due on your own or with the help of the professional fence contractors, there are a few important things involved in fence planning and building you need to know in order to come up with a reasonable project, save your money on materials, avoid certain problems that might occur during the construction and end up with a durable fence that meets your expectations and requirements.

Thorough planning and careful preparation are crucial when youre willing to embark on a DIY fence building project to successfully put up either a cute picket or a utilitarian chain-link or a privacy fence around your property.

Things to know before building a fence

Check the local codes

Some states and counties impose legal prohibitions on fence building. Some of them set strict construction guidelines regarding the height of the fence and some other features. Make sure that the fence youre going to build meets the local requirements and you wont have to spend your time and money on building something youll have to take down as soon as the local authorities ask you to do so.

Talk to your neighbors

As youre going to build a fence on the line, dividing your and your neighbors plots, its important to make sure that the people who live next to you arent completely against your construction. Moreover, sometimes such construction will meet both your and your neighbors interests, thus you may talk about splitting the costs of building a fence between your properties to cut your expenses. Anyway, aim for a constructive talk and a compromise.

Mark the site properly

Firstly, you need to make sure that the line youre going to construct your fence on is definitely the border line of the properties not to go beyond your own territory. Property plans and a land surveyor (hell stake out the plot to mark the border lines) will help you do that just fine. Remember to call your gas provider to schedule a free demarcation appointment before you start digging for the post not to disrupt any lines and cause major trouble. If youre hiring fence contractors to do the job, they should ask you to do that prior to digging as well.

Choose the design and the materials wisely

Fence construction is quite a costly project, especially when it comes to building tall privacy fences or the ones that are made of expensive materials like precast concrete panels or metal fence panels. For modest budgets, even building a picket fence around the entire plot is quite expensive.

Thus, consider combining different materials (like picket for the front yard and chain-linked for the rest of the plot) and make sure that the posts you install for your fence are able to sustain both the load of the fencing and the exposure to different weather conditions.

Dont forget about the maintenance part of the issue when planning your fence as well. For instance, picket fences have to be repainted every few years depending on the climate, as well as replaced after a while due to the fact that the wood tends to rot over the course of time.

Think for the long-term perspective

Its not only the height of the fence and the construction material you need to think about. Its also the width of entrance points and the gates you should pay particular attention to. Plan those the way that the bigger vehicles (like moving trucks, construction tractors, firefighters (God forbid!), cranes of tree services etc.) are able to get in and out when needed. On top of that, its better to include at least two entrances for the backyard in terms of safety and convenience.

Your pool has to be fenced

Even if you dont want to have a fence around your entire property, in most states its the law demands that the owners of homes with outdoor pools have to build a fence around that part of their backyard or at least around the pool to prevent unfortunate accidents ( e.g. kids falling into the water).

Usually, its required that the fence has to be at least 4ft high and has to feature a self-closing gate for safety purposes. But, you need to check in with the local codes to know for sure.

Know when to build

If you live in a mild climate with relatively warm winters, think about building a fence in late autumn or winter, as you might stumble across great construction discounts, provided by the contractors willing to receive orders during the quite period of the year.

Famous Residents Of Carmel

Carmel California is a small city, but it attracts visitors from near and far. Its beautiful scenery and many things to do have made it one of the most popular vacation spots in the world. Perhaps all the beauty and fun is what also attracts celebrities. Through history and still today, numerous famous faces have made Carmel their home. The stunning natural landscapes and high-class shopping have made Carmel into the ideal home for artists and actors alike.

Among such famous names in history that found homes in Carmel are Jack London, Robert Louis Stevenson, Upton Sinclair, George Sterling, Francis Whitaker, and Henry Miller. Carmel also received frequent visits from author John Steinbeck who was raised in nearby Salinas. Two of Carmel's more well known celebrities graced the silver screen and television for many years, Doris Day and Clint Eastwood . . . in fact Clint Eastwood is still producing and starring in feature films. Doris Day started off her career as a big band singer and within short order became one of Hollywood's leading actresses. She starred in numerous movies alongside famous actors the likes of Rock Hudson, James Stewart, Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra, James Cagney, Cary Grant, and even one of our past presidents, Ronald Reagan.

After a long and industrious entertaining and acting career Doris Day retired to Carmel where she bacame an inn owner and social activist. Along with her partner Dennis LeVitt. they operate The Cypress Inn, where not only human guests are welcome but their animal friends as well. As a result of her love for animals Doris founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation dedicated to creating caring communities by acknowledging the significant interrelationship between animal welfare and human development.

While Doris Day brought the love of animals to Carmel, Clint Eastwood brought change, progress, and innovation to the small city. Clint Eastwood made his first investment in Carmel by establishing a pub and restaurant called Hog's Breath Inn in 1971. In 1986 he sought to expand the restaurant but faced resistance from the local government. With an upcoming mayoral election, he quickly decided to run for the office of mayor. He received much support in the election and received over 72 percent of the votes.

Eastwood's success as mayor included easing the property regulations that limited construction and remodeling, building a tourist parking lot and beach walkways, and adding a children's annex onto the library. Perhaps his most lasting decision that is still significant today was to purchase the Mission Ranch.

In 1986 after being elected as mayor of Carmel, Eastwood decided to purchase Mission Ranch so that its beauty would not be lost and converted into condominiums. With more leverage in regard to building regulations, he renovated the Mission Ranch Inn and Restaurant. Though his term as mayor lasted only two years without the motivation to be re-elected, Eastwood still owns Mission Ranch and keeps it in top condition.

As an avid golfer, Eastwood made further investment in Carmel in 1997 when he established Tehama Golf Club in the beautiful Carmel Valley. Tehama is an exclusive membership-based golf club that gains members by invitation only. He also continually invests in Pebble Beach Golf Links nearby Carmel.

Carmel has become prime real estate among the wealthy and the privileged locals. A few of the Hollywood faces with homes in Carmel include Betty White, Jennifer Aniston, and Craig Kilborn. Among the business world with homes in Carmel are elite businessmen Rupert Murdoch and Charles Schwab. In the international aspect, Dutch Olympian Ben Pon chose Carmel to establish his home and Bernardus Winery. The investments in Carmel continue to grow as more and more elite individuals realize the beauty of exquisite Carmel.

Facial Workouts For Baggy Cheeks And Jowls Advice For Glowing Non-Surgical Facelifts

Facial Workouts For Baggy Cheeks And Jowls Advice For Glowing Non-Surgical Facelifts

Certain women and men whose cheek bulk is primarily limp tissue are inclined to be on the losing end of gravity and obtain sagging jowls and loose cheeks somewhat prematurely in their adult life. The same can be said for deep marionette folds and mouth wrinkles. Learn to diminish these wrinkles and limit saggy cheeks with facial aerobics and acupressure toning.

Unlike children, when it pertains to adults, chubby cheeks are not so attractive to the eye for the reason that they make a person look obese, or older. They are oftentimes indications of aging, genetic inheritance, or just fat forming on the face. Water retention or a demanding lifestyle can moreover be a cause.

Rubbing face muscle tissue is constructive in slowing and elevating saggy face and drooping cheek skin. Here's how you can tauten the face by means of massage:

Below the eye yoga facial exercises: Situate your forefingers on the lower eye sockets just below the eyeballs lined up with the pupils. This is where eye bags and dark rings arise. Make small, firm outward circles. This will diminish eye bags and lift the cheeks and jowls for a firmed-up middle face.

Cheekbones facial gymnastics exercises: Situate your index fingers on the fissure of the cheekbones, lined up with the pupils. Practice small, firm outward circles. The cheek muscles and tissue will fill and pull the skin inward and up for a lean appearance. Cheek bones will be more shapely from this rejuvenating workout, and your face will glow with vigor and color.

Jaw hinge face aerobics workouts: Open your mouth slightly and move your jaw up and down whilst positioning your forefingers on the groove of the hinge itself. Keep your mouth slightly open while you practice small, upward circles beginning at the jaw hinge. This massage will puff out hollow areas and lessen slack jowl skin in the mid and lower face.

Marionette creases face gymnastics exercises: Put the same fingers above the upper lip on the creases that develop between the nose and edges of the lips from laughing and smiling. In the middle of these creases is the acupressure point. Move your fingers with small outward circles. This will rejuvenate the region under the cheeks and helps with fading or even removing smile folds. This will also tone and tighten sagging jowls and lower face tissue.

Press firmly whilst doing these cheek and face aerobics, but not too hard as to induce pain. Execute these routines as much as possible and you will see an improvement in a week or so. As you apply these facial yoga toning workouts, you might notice a tingling in the zones being massaged. This is good as it means that the acupressure energy points are opening and channeling blood to the muscle and skin in the face. Just these 4 treatments can result in a gorgeous non-surgical mini facelift.

For those ladies and men who have sunken cheeks and the yearning is to acquire chubby cheeks, we advise practicing the above face workouts 2, 3, and 4 only. Facial aerobics re-define the tissue on the face and neck for better looks and reinstate it nearer to the semblance of your youth, when you didn't have chunky cheeks and sagging jowls. Alternatively, sunken regions here will fill and the thin skin will emerge more vibrant and have more volume.

Face yoga treatments help to minimize the appearance of chubby cheeks by stimulating the muscles of the face for a more defined and honed look. Face massages do not require any special gear and they take just minutes per day to carry out with one's fingertips.

Aside from facelift exercises, we suggest consuming eight glasses of water per day, eat more greens and fish. Try and get more exercise, swallow a multivitamin, chew sugar-free gum in the day to strengthen the cheek muscles, which will ultimately lead to a sharper face and reduced jowls.

Baggy cheeks, jowls, and mouth creases can be significantly diminished with face gymnastics exercises. When contemplating the possibilities of plastic surgery, liposuction, fillers as opposed to face toning, make sure you consider price, how lasting the results are, and the peril of something going off beam. While artificial cheek tightening and plumping is costly, invasive, yet immediate, face exercises are convenient and good for your health, but take a bit of time. Choose your methods cautiously!

Extract from Green Mussels is an Alternative to NSAIDS

Many people who suffer from chronic inflammation are prescribed such treatments as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), however, they may not be aware of natural treatments for this condition, such as the extract from green mussels.

Many patients these days are seeking safer alternatives to traditional medicinal therapy. Natural products are becoming more and more popular. But they do really work? And is there really a reason to turn to natural remedies over more traditional medicines?

Pharmaceutical companies are loath to admit it, but NSAIDs have been attributed to tens of thousands of deaths from patients prescribed this medicine in the United States alone. One report claims that nearly 14,000 Americans die each year after taking NSAIDs for an extended period of time and that Vioxx alone is responsible for more the deaths of more than 50,000 citizens. While statistics from other countries are not available, these statistics alone are quite frightening.

What is the danger? NSAID medicines, such as Vioxx, which has since been taken off the market, can cause internal bleeding. The medicine eats away at the stomach lining and intestines, causing some patients to bleed to death from excessive damage.

Vioxx was only removed from the pharmaceuticals market after a representative of the United States' Food and Drug Administration brought to light the drug's adverse effects and lobbied to label it as unapproved for use. Unfortunately, many people died before anything was done.

There are still many types of NSAIDs being prescribed but as a consequence of the Vioxx tragedy, many patients are seeking natural alternatives to these drugs.

What can green mussel extract do for inflammation? Green lipped mussels are only found in the waters off the coast of New Zealand. Long recognized as a nutrient-rich, super food, they have also been shown to contain high amounts of lipids, omega-3 fatty acids, and a chondroitin derivative - all of which inhibit the enzymes which cause inflammation.

Green mussels are farmed strictly in licensed facilities in New Zealand. They contain no mercury, metals, or hazardous substances due to the controlled, eco-friendly environment of the marine farms.

The best feature of using extract from green mussels as an anti-inflammatory agent is that there are no associated side effects. This all-natural product is harmless and, in fact, provides benefits for the skin, nervous system, brain function, and even mood. In fact, researchers are currently establishing a link between green mussel extract and the ability to stave off Alzheimer's disease.

The only contraindication for patients wishing to take extract of green mussels is an allergic reaction to seafood. Anyone who has an allergy to seafood and seafood products should not take green mussel extract in any form.

Research studies are continually be performed to prove the healthful benefits derived from the lipid and omega-3-rich oil and powder extracted from New Zealand's green mussels.

Extract of green mussels is showing great promise as an alternative to taking risky NSAIDs for treatment of chronic inflammation. If you have a prescription for NSAIDs, talk with your doctor about this natural remedy which may lead to relief of inflammation.

Exterior Blinds Eco-Friendly Sun Blockers

Many homeowners are continuously searching for ways to make their home more environmentally friendly and lower their rising energy costs as well. While there are several steps homeowners can take to accomplish these desired goals, one way they may not have considered is installing exterior blinds. Outdoor blinds act as sun blockers and have been shown to block up to 90 percent of the ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. Blinds such as these are the ideal way to reduce the temperature in a home as they can be used to control solar heat gain as well as glare and light levels within the home. Depending on the type of material from which the blinds are made, they may also provide ventilation. Exterior blinds are perfect for patios, decks, porches, pergolas, bay windows, glass roofs, verandas, skylights, and conservatories.

Types of Exterior Blinds:

There are several types of these blinds from which homeowners may choose. These may be made of materials such as wood, fabric, or other types of fabricated materials. Homeowners may choose a blind that mimic the interior blinds in a home. These exterior blinds will be slatted and are great for insulation and privacy. Sheer, mesh blinds are also available. These types give the home a feeling of open space and provide excellent ventilation. Outdoor blinds can be made to fit any size and shape of window, and they come in a variety of designs and colours. These types of blinds are durable and resistant to all kinds of weather conditions.

How Exterior Blinds Work:

While interior shades can help decrease the amount of heat that builds up in a home, exterior blinds work more effectively. This is because they help to reduce the temperature in a home by blocking the sunlight before it enters the windows. Exterior blinds often have either vertical or horizontal slats. The blinds are adjustable; therefore, the homeowner can control the level of light entering the home. Depending on the design of the blinds, they may be adjusted from the inside or the outside of the home. Exterior blinds may be crank operated or they may be operated by a motor. Typically, blinds wider than 3 meters will need to be operated by a motor.

The addition of exterior blinds to a home are just one way in which homeowners can reduce their energy costs. Shutters may also be an excellent option for homeowners. Both exterior blinds and shutters can complement the architecture of any home, increase curb appeal, and add value to a home. Homeowners may want to speak to a professional when considering installing exterior blinds.

Ethical Trading In Promotional Merchandise Do you Buy Products Made By Slave Labour

Do you or your suppliers employ child slave labour to make your branded products such as Promotional Clothing or Promotional Merchandise? Are your goods manufactured in factories where workers are forced to sleep on their workbenches and live in unsanitary conditions ?

You may think you know the answer but do you really know what goes on all the way up and down your supply chain? This article sets out to explain what Ethical Trading in Promotional Products is all about and why you should seriously consider introducing Ethical practices into your supply chain.

Failure to check out your ethical credentials could cost you your business because you and your brand could be next to appear on the front pages of newspapers and on the TV screens in millions of living rooms around the globe.

Since the dawn of time man has acted unethically by enslaving his fellow man usually for reasons of profit and whilst it is fair to say that a great deal of slavery has been reduced it certainly has not by any measure been eradicated. A recent report by the Trades Union Congress estimated that there are more than 250 million children around the globe who were employed in work which jeopardised their education, health or freedom. There are two major differences now compared to 1807 when slavery was abolished in the UK. Firstly society in general has grown a social conscience and is abhorred by the thought of child or prison slave labour being used in the manufacturing of goods they purchase. Secondly communications have become so instant that when stories of unethical trading are reported they are flashed around the world in minutes.

Yet there are still many corporations that do not recognise how much damage can be inflicted upon them by not trading ethically. A simple search on Google for child slave labour in the UK brings up a plethora of related stories. It should also be recognised that these stories do not just create issues for major high street stores but very small companies who are part of any supply chain can be affected in exactly the same way. If these companies are found to be trading unethically and are unwilling to change then they will undoubtedly be dropped as preferred suppliers.

Does your Promotional Products company trade ethically now? Only a tiny fraction of companies ever set out to trade unethically. The rest, if it ever crosses their minds, probably assume that they do trade ethically and until such times as it comes to light that there may be issues in their supply chain they have no reason to think otherwise. Until a few years ago ignorance could have been used as an excuse but it is no longer acceptable. The advent of the internet and other improvements in communications means that information on any farm or factory can easily be obtained mostly within a matter of days.

When was the last time that your company really looked closely at your supply chain to see where all the components of your products are originating? Are you sure that everyone you deal with and those suppliers that they deal with are not using child or prison labour. Are all the components, Promotional Clothing or foodstuffs that you are selling produced in clean and sanitary conditions? These questions do not just apply to the major high street stores, they are relevant to every link in the supply chain both large and small.

Erbium 10 Things You Should Know About This Chemical Element

Erbiumthough it sounds like a name created by one of the less than stellar characters from Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, erbium is actually one of Earths rare elements. In fact, it is often found combined with a variety of other elements in its natural state on Earth. If you are interested in learning a great deal more about this rare elemental metal, then keep reading. Weve listed 10 super facts about this rarely discussed metal below.

1. Carl Gustaf Mosander is the man who discovered erbium in 1843 and he named it after the nearby Swedish village of Ytterby. Erbia was discovered by Mosander after he searated yttria into three separate fractions from gadolinite.

2. Surprisingly, what was once thought to be erbia was actually later found to be another element called terbia. This occurred in 1860 and, by 1877, the element that was being called erbia was renamed terbia.

3. The erbium concentration in the crust of the Earth is estimated to be 2.8 mg/kg; however, in the oceans and seas, it is estimated to be about 0.9 ng/L, making erbium the 45th most abundant element within Earths crust.

4. Erbium has never been found in its pure form in nature, but it can be found within the sand ores of monazite.

5. Erbium, like many of the rare earths, is not only expensive, but difficult to remove from the ores that it is found bound to. However, ion-exchange techniques that were created in the latter part of the 20th century have been able to help reduce erbium production costs and make separating this element from other ores much easier.

6. The main two traditional commercial sources for erbium were xenotime and euxenite. More recently, China has overtaken the position of global principal supplier by locating and producing erbium found in ion adsorption clays.

7. Erbium is produced by crushing minerals and allowing them to be attacked either sulfuric or hydrochloric acid. This transforms any insoluble oxides into chlorides that are soluble or sulfates. Caustic soda then neutralizes any acidic filtrates and thorium will precipitate from the solution for removal. It will then be treated to convert the rare earths to insoluble oxalates via ammonium oxalate. These oxalates will then be annealed to create oxides, which are then dissolved using nitric acid. Magnesium nitrate is then used to produce the double salts.

8. Once the double salts are produced, the ion exchange process is set into motion, thus washing out selective ions. The erbium will then be obtained from either salts or oxides by heating the salts or oxides with calcium in temperatures of 1450 degrees Celsius.

9. Erbium is widely used due to its remarkable resilience. It is frequently used to form photographic filters, in the creation of nuclear technology and to create metallurgical additives.

10. Erbium is also frequently used in its oxide form to color glass, porcelain and cubic zirconia. In addition, erbium-doped silica-glass fibers frequently are used to create optical communications materials. Erbium is also widely used in dermatology and dentistry applications.

Environmental Charities

You feel sincerely about nature and you are wondering what you could do to reduce global warming and climatic changes in your own small way? You have the environmental charities that look after the cause of global warming and climatic changes and these charities do accept donations from people like you. People who want to make a change in current climatic and global warming situation can donate some money to these environmental charities.

Environmental charities do not expect you to give them thousands or even hundreds of dollars. They would be happy with just a $10 from a family. This would boost their confidence and spirit. Small donations from large numbers of people can make a lot of difference. It helps these charities to buy piece of land, this money helps them to hire labor for reforestation and also taking care of these forests till these can sustain themselves.

Environmental charities do not simply carry out reforestation, rather these also have to take care in future that forests recreated are not again destroyed by cutting for commercial activities. Reforested lands need to be protected against any possible intervention by the local wood selling agents.

There are thousands of environmental charities all over the world. Earlier these charities drew donations from large corporations which were also responsible for spreading pollution more than anyone else. Now with new awareness spreading among people, common people too, want to contribute to something towards environment and its protection. Therefore, now it is not just the large corporations, but also people who donate to these charities so that they can function and bring out substantial changes in environment through reforestation.

Environmental charities are of two different types of scope. Some operate in their own country and try to start reforestation whereas there are some types of charities which function internationally. These charities collect a lot more sum of money and operate on a larger scale than those which work only inside the country. These are therefore, better organized and also their work is being scrutinized by thousands around the world.

These charities do try to promote themselves by organizing events which will attract public attention. These events also create awareness in minds of people making it possible to create a clear picture about how the environmental matters stand at present. This way people can be educated better - about what can cause pollution and the small things that could be done to avoid and to follow, if they want to do their planet something good.

If you want to donate for the well being of our planet Earth you can do so by simply contacting the environmental charities and knowing about their present projects and future plans. If anything catches your fancy you can actually donate some money, so we will leave our children a better place to live.

Environment Conservation Programmes in Danielson College, M.P., India

Established in 1970, Danielson College has been involved in various Environmental Conservation activities for a long time back. Dr M K Rai was the first man who laid foundation to environmental activities in the college. He started a programme called Environment Conservation Programme (ECP). This programme was aimed to spread knowledge on environment conservation among the tribal people of the area.

AIMS OF THE ECP

to develop awareness attitude and skills among the school children and tribal folk;

to encourage and involve the tribal community to participate in environmental activities;

to teach the community about the proper utilization of medicinal plants and conservation of endangered species in the tribal pockets;

to make the people aware of various methods of environmental improvement;

to understand the damage that man has done to his environment

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Several environmental activities were carried out by giving formal (in educational institutions) and non-formal (outside the institution) education for the last 15 years. The programmes were generally conducted in collaboration with Women Cell of the college, and local NGOs working for the similar cause of environment. Pragya Environment Society, which is devoted to non-formal education has been a great asset.

AWARENESS GENERATING ACTIVITIES

Drawing and painting competition, exhibition (Tribal areas, like Guraiya, Jhilmili, Linga and other places), Stickers, posters, pamphlets, news-letters, books, short stories, like Ped Aur Balidaan, know your herbal medicine competition, eco-camps, rallies, field trips, plantation, congress grass (Parthenium hysterophorus) eradication, preparation of short video films like Koshishen (meaning Efforts), which is based on local environment.

SURVEY AND POPULARIZATION OF MEDICINAL HERBS

Surveys of traditional medicinal plants were conducted in the tribal pockets of Chhindwara, viz., Patalkot, Tamia, Sidhouli, Harrai and Bichhua. There are more than 275- medicinal plants in the tribal pockets. Awareness for holy herbs like Basil (Ocimum sanctum), and mint (Mentha piperita) was generated among the tribal people. A book on Herbal Medicines was published in local language and distributed among the common men (Rai, 1994).

CONVENTIONS ON BIO-DIVERSITY CONSERVATION

A Two-day national level seminar on Herbal Medicines, Bio-diversity and Conservation Strategies, was organized by the college in 1994. The local Vaidhyas and Traditional herbal healers had organized exhibition concerning herbal medicines. This seminar had an encouraging impact among the local rural and tribal people towards the conservation of medicinal herbs. In 1998, another national seminar was organized on Integrated Management of Plant Resources, which also generated awareness towards conservation of nature. In the year 2002, a two-day workshop on Conservation and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants was organized by the Department of Botany of the college.

NON- CONVENTIONAL SOURCES OF ENERGY

Improved Sigdis and Chulhas (modified traditional Indian stoves made of iron and mud respectively) were distributed and training on improved and smokeless Chulha preparation was also organized in the tribal pockets, i.e., Sidhouli and Gadarwara.

TEACHERS TRAINING PROGRAMMES

The teachers training programmes on EE were organized at Linga, Sidhouli, Bhanadehi and Kundalikala. In all, teachers of 62 schools participated in this programme.

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER POLLUTION

A survey of well water of Chhindwara was carried out to assess the water quality. A two day workshop was organized on Water Pollution: Causes and solution at Bhanadehi, a tribal village.

ECO-CAMPS AND EXHIBITIONS & PUBLIC LECTURES

Eco-camps and exhibitions were organized at Sidhouli, Tamiya (1992,1993) Kundalikala (1993), Patalkot (1994,1995, 1999), Jhilmili (1993, 1997), Bhanadehi (1998, 1999), Goreghat (1998), Ajaniya (1999) and Gadarwara (1994, 1996, 1999). In 1997-99, under Children Awareness Programme, exhibitions were organized at local primary schools in association with Friends Nature Club (WWF). The lectures of eminent environmentalists, such as, R. Mishra, V K Saxena and others were also arranged.

GREEN SCHOOL PROGRAMME

Tribal schools of Chikhli-kala, Sarora, Goreghat, Pathra and Gadarwara were selected for generation of awareness activities throughout the year under this programme.

ECO(Environment Conservation Operation) in CAMPUS

Two societies viz., ECO Campus and Friends Nature Club in college are responsible for a growing awareness of the importance of conservation among the students.

Eco-Campus: This society was formed by Dr Deepak Acharya in the year 1997. The group was open for all students of the college. The society core area of functioning was to organize workshops, meetings, excursion, eco-drive etc. On Sundays, students are encouraged to clean-drive work in college

Green- Drive included:
1- Eradication of alien plants from areas where they have invaded the indigenous bush. These include plants like Narangi (Lantana camera), titi (cassia tora), and other grasses. Some very good progress has been made but it is an ongoing task.
2- Surveying of plants found in campus, preparation of notes, and update of information.

3- White washing of the college walls, sweeping, water tank cleaning

4- Preparation of Aushadhi Vatika (medicinal plant garden).

5- Informative notes on Notice board etc.

6- Quiz competition, debate, group discussion, play performance, drawing and poetry writing competitions are organized.
7- Environment friendly games etc

Friends Nature Club: Dr M K Rai started this club in the year 1997.

Constraints

FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS : Although, there are Government agencies, like, Department of Environment, EPCO and DST which supports to individuals, NGOs and to Government departments, yet the assistance is provided to limited number of NGOs.

LACK OF TEACHERS ATTITUDE : The heads of school must take initiative to provide the facilities/ infrastructure for organization of science or nature clubs. The encouraging attitude of authorities will boost up the morale of the teachers. The teachers should also realize the importance of environmental education to make the better contribution for a healthy society.

COMMUNICATION GAP: While implementing the Environment Education among the people of the tribal areas, language is main constraint. The tribal people have their own dialect. Sometimes, they do not understand our language and show non-cooperation.

NEED-BASED EDUCATION: Usually the syllabi for the school children are prepared by the educationists unawared of the local environmental problems, for instance, if the tribal village is surrounded by medicinal plants the later should be given much emphasis for conservation.

Conclusions

The Environment Education has been a topic of discussion after Stockholm conference. But less implementation has been made outside the academic institutions. There is a pressing need of non-formal education because it is the powerful way to create awareness, percolate knowledge and develop skills among the tribal people to conserve environment. Government institutions and NGOs working in the field of Environment Education may play vital role in achieving the target. We must emphasize on eco-friendly and economically viable way of Environment Education. Even the awared people, due to lack of knowledge and skills, sometimes found themselves unable to protect the environment. Awareness could be generated not only by teaching but also by involving them and involving ourselves also in their day-to-day life. Thus, Environment Education based on scientific approaches may open up new doors for the conservation of environment.
